One of today's most daunting issues involves former AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children) recipients. Rather than simply abandoning them, the Nation has switched to a new program designed to prepare former welfare recipients for the world of work. Dubbed Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), the program is operated by UPO and other groups in the District of Columbia. UPO, working in partnership with the District of Columbia Department on Human services and ACS State and Local Solutions, is moving ahead to provide TANF recipients with the necessary tools needed in today's workplace. Beryl C. Johnson is Program Director for UPO's TANF Program.
