Our theme is The Urgency of NOW because we’re calling for bold changes that help our neighbors thrive.
The breakfast is our annual fundraiser for the Joseph A. Beavers Scholarships and other UPO programs that Unite People with Opportunities. To keep everyone safe, the event will be virtual instead of in person.

Congressman
JAMES E. CLYBURN
Congressman James E. Clyburn is the Majority Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives. He previously served as Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus and Chair of the House Democratic Caucus.
The son of an activist minister and a civic-minded beautician, he was elected president of his South Carolina NAACP youth chapter at age 12; he helped to organize civil rights marches and met his future wife Emily in jail following a student demonstration.
As a national leader, he has championed rural and economic development and many of his initiatives have become law. He is also a passionate supporter of historic preservation and restoration programs; he authored legislation that created the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor and the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. He is a retired public school teacher whose memoir, Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black, is a primer for every student eager to pursue a career in public service.
What does your support mean?
Your generous donation creates opportunities for students like Erica Davis, a 2011 Beavers Scholar who graduated from the University of Kansas, earning her Bachelor’s in Social Welfare in 2016. She earned her Master’s in Social Work in 2017 and is now a Clinical Counselor at Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, DC’s Ward 7. Erica is the first person from her family to graduate from college, which is true for the overwhelming majority of our scholars.
“The Joseph A. Beavers Scholarship was the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Ms. Davis. “It gave me the courage to grow in ways that I could not imagine. I am now a well-rounded, culturally humble and competent person, hungry for equality and equity. I am determined to seek justice and empower others.”
