Senator Cory Booker
Senator Cory Booker believes that the American dream isn’t real for anyone unless it’s within reach of everyone. He has dedicated his life to fighting for those who have been left out, left behind, or left without a voice.
After studying at Stanford University, the University of Oxford (as a Rhodes Scholar), and Yale Law School, he moved to Newark and started a nonprofit organization to provide legal services for low-income families. Booker was elected to the Newark City Council, then served as Newark’s mayor for more than 7 years, when the city entered its longest period of economic growth since the 1960s. In addition, overall crime declined and the quality of life for residents improved due to initiatives such as more affordable housing, new green spaces and parks, more education options, and more efficient city services.
As New Jersey’s junior Senator since 2013, he brings an innovative and consensus-building approach to tackling the most difficult issues, including criminal justice reform. He works tirelessly to unite people with opportunities—that’s why he and UPO fit together perfectly.

Your generous donation creates opportunities for students like Erica Davis, a 2011 Beavers Scholar who graduated from the University of Kansas, earning her Bachelor’s in Social Welfare in 2016. She earned her Master’s in Social Work in 2017 and is now a Clinical Counselor at Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, DC’s Ward 7. Erica is the first person from her family to graduate from college, which is true for the overwhelming majority of our scholars.
“The Joseph A. Beavers Scholarship was the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Ms. Davis. “It gave me the courage to grow in ways that I could not imagine. I am now a well-rounded, culturally humble and competent person, hungry for equality and equity. I am determined to seek justice and empower others.”
