Advocates Make Final Push To Involve Hard-To-Count D.C. Areas In The Census

September 22, 2020

Olivia Henderson was cajoling, dancing and yelling outside the Bald Eagle Recreation Center on Joliet Street in Southwest D.C. the other day.

She wasn’t trying to entertain pedestrians or drivers. She just wanted to get people to fill out a census form by the Sept. 30 deadline.

Henderson held up a sign that read “Be Heard, Be Counted” as she yelled to people, cars, even buses. “Honk if you’ve done your census!” she shouted.

Henderson, the Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) for this area, has partnered with a local nonprofit, United Planning Organization, to get the word out. “Sometimes you got to jump in traffic to get your point out there!” she says. “This is going to affect us for the next 10 years.”
