“How You Can Make a House a Home”
UPO’s Board of Directors is devoted to helping people lift themselves out of poverty and into economic stability. And when we help people move from homelessness into permanent homes, we want to make sure they have the tools they need to rebuild their lives.
So the case managers on our Permanent Supportive Housing team help individuals and families turn their lives around! But when they open the door of their new apartment, it’s empty. And they arrive with just the clothes on their backs. It’s up to us to help them get the basics — plates, towels, pillows, soap — that you and I take for granted.
Together, we can restore dignity and hope. That’s what this fundraising campaign will do.
We’ll help people to cook at home, clean, sleep comfortably, and feel a sense of ownership of their new space. Then they’ll be more likely to stay housed and engage with UPO’s other powerful economic security programs.

Robert was homeless for 30 years due to addictions to heroin and alcohol. He joined UPO’s program after his release from prison. Robert gained a home and a UPO Case Manager who helped him thrive. For over a year, he kept his housing and finances stable. At that point, he was ready to stand on his own two feet and we called him “our newest graduate.” Now he proudly works as a peer recovery coach.
“Welcome Home Fund:
Essentials for Newly Housed Clients”
The $75,000 we’ll raise will enable us to restore comfort and dignity for newly-housed people by supplying:
- Pots and pans
- Dishes and utensils
- Bed linens and pillows
- Towels and hygiene supplies
- Small appliances (such as a microwave)
For Example:
Mr. M, a recently housed customer, had no cookware so he tried to prepare food directly in the oven. He was also sleeping on a bare mattress. If he had basic essentials, he’d immediately improve his safety, well-being, and ability to make a home. With an average cost of $300-450 per household kit, our fund could support 166+ households, creating an immediate and tangible impact.

Honestly, $3,000 would help 100 people make their living spaces into true homes. $4,500 would help 100 families make their apartments into “Home Sweet Homes.”
